Georgia has long been a bastion of Republican values, but not all cities in The Peach State are created equal. Some are more friendly to conservative ideals than others, and if you’re a Republican voter in Georgia, it’s important to know which cities are the worst places to live. Let’s take a look at the top five worst cities for Georgia Republicans.
Atlanta
As the state capital and largest city in Georgia, Atlanta is far from Republican-friendly. It is home to several universities and diverse industries that draw people from all over the globe, leading to a population that leans heavily Democrat. In the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton won 73% of the vote in Atlanta compared to only 24% for Donald Trump.
Athens
Located near the University of Georgia and home to many young liberal-leaning voters, Athens can be an especially tough place for Republicans. This was particularly true during the 2018 midterms when Democrats swept every major office up for grabs in Athens County.
Savannah
Savannah is another large city with a strongly Democratic bent. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won 75% of the vote while Donald Trump came away with only 22%. Savannah is also home to numerous colleges and universities populated by young voters who tend to lean left on social issues such as abortion rights and LGBTQ rights.
Columbus
Columbus has been a Democratic stronghold since 1996 when Bill Clinton won nearly three-quarters of the vote there en route to his re-election victory over Bob Dole. Eight years later, George W Bush carried Columbus County with just 51% of its votes; an even slimmer majority than he received statewide (57%). And in 2016 Donald Trump didn’t fare much better here; receiving less than one third (31%) of its votes against Hillary Clinton’s 61%.
Augusta
Augusta has been carried by Democrats since 1992 when Bill Clinton won almost 66% of its votes against George H W Bush’s 33%. Despite being located in traditionally conservative East Central Georgia, this city still leans heavily blue today; Hillary Clinton earned 64% of its votes in 2016 compared to Donald Trump’s 30%.
There’s no doubt about it; some cities in Georgia are far more friendly towards Republicans than others! If you’re looking for somewhere safe from “the other side” then make sure you avoid these five cities at all costs! Wherever you decide to live though, make sure you get out there and cast your ballot at every opportunity because elections have consequences! Every vote counts!
