Unhinged Democrats Bring Out Dancing Frogs During Anti-SOTU Event

Nearly 50 Democrat lawmakers decided they had better things to do than attend President Trump’s State of the Union address. Instead of sitting in the House chamber for one of the most traditional events in American politics, they staged their own competing production on the National Mall.

The counter event, branded the “People’s State of the Union,” drew hundreds of activists and roughly 30 Democratic members of Congress. While President Trump was inside outlining his agenda on border security, economic growth, and law and order, Democrats were outside chanting “Abolish ICE” and holding signs that read “No Money for ICE” and “Healthcare Not Warfare.”

And yes, there were frog costumes.

The event opened with what were described as Portland ant fascist frogs dancing on stage. Attendees wore green outfits and inflatable frog gear to fit a swamp theme. At one point, a man in a giraffe costume was spotted in the crowd. This is apparently how serious policy alternatives are presented in 2026.

MoveOn executive director Katie Bethell said the group helped organize the boycott “because we know that Donald Trump’s State of the Union will bear no resemblance to what’s actually happening in this country today.” Senator Chris Murphy explained his absence from the official address by saying, “these are not normal times, and Democrats have to stop behaving normally.”

Translation, skip the constitutional ceremony and head to the protest rally.

The event featured Afghan refugee advocate Fereshteh Ganjavi and included a display honoring individuals who died in interactions involving ICE. At one point, a Trump supporter pushed through barricades and briefly confronted Murphy before being removed. MSNBC host Joy Reid addressed the interruption from the stage, telling “Maga trolls” their presence was not welcome.

Meanwhile, over at the National Press Club, another counter event dubbed the “State of the Swamp” featured actor Robert De Niro as the headline speaker. De Niro asked the crowd, “Can you love a country that pardons violent criminals and protects pedophiles?” He went on to say he felt “betrayed” by his country and urged people to attend a future “No King” protest.

All of this unfolded while President Trump delivered his speech to a joint session of Congress.

Boycotts are nothing new in Washington. But skipping the State of the Union to dance in frog costumes and listen to Hollywood lectures is a choice. The American system allows for dissent, protest, and counter programming. That is part of free speech.

Still, the contrast was striking. Inside the Capitol, a president addressing the nation. Outside, chants, costumes, and celebrity outrage. Voters will decide which vision of leadership they prefer.
