BOOM! Trump Administration Opens New Probe Into 2020 Election Results

Arizona politics is getting another blast from the past, and predictably the reaction from the usual corners of the political world is somewhere between eye-rolling and outright panic. The Trump administration has launched a new federal investigation tied to the 2020 presidential election in Arizona, focusing again on the infamous Maricopa County ballot review. For people who thought the arguments about that election were permanently shelved, well, that assumption aged about as well as gas station sushi.

Federal investigators are now seeking records related to the Republican-led 2021 ballot review in Maricopa County, Arizona’s largest county and ground zero for the endless debates that followed President Trump’s loss in the state. The Department of Homeland Security’s investigations arm has reportedly started examining aspects of the 2020 election results. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes confirmed that the inquiry is underway, which immediately triggered criticism from Democratic officials who seem very eager for everyone to move along and stop asking questions.

The investigation reportedly involves Homeland Security Investigations, known as HSI, which normally deals with transnational crime, smuggling networks, and financial crimes. In other words, election disputes are not typically their lane. That fact alone has some political observers scratching their heads and others wondering whether federal authorities think something more serious might be buried in the mountain of election paperwork from 2020.

According to Reuters, the FBI has issued a subpoena to the Arizona Senate requesting records connected to the 2021 Maricopa County ballot review. That review became a national spectacle after Republican lawmakers ordered a detailed examination of the ballots cast during the presidential race. Critics called it a circus; supporters called it necessary transparency. Either way, it dominated headlines for months.

Multiple reviews conducted after the election did not substantiate widespread fraud claims tied to the results, something Democrats are quick to remind everyone about. Arizona Attorney General Mayes wasted no time taking a jab at the renewed investigation. She told ABC News, “The Trump administration is engaged in an unserious investigation into an election that took place six years ago based on nothing but conspiracy theories and lies.”

She also added, “At the request of local leadership at Homeland Security Investigations, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office provided them with public records from the 2020 election investigation conducted under the prior Attorney General, Mark Brnovich. We were happy to share them, because those materials speak for themselves.”

That statement carries a heavy dose of confidence, although critics might point out that if the materials really do “speak for themselves,” then handing them over should not be a problem.

This is not happening in a vacuum. Earlier this year, federal attention also turned toward election administration in Georgia after a referral from a Trump-appointed election official. That move suggested that some federal authorities remain interested in revisiting lingering questions from the 2020 cycle.

Arizona remains one of the most competitive battleground states in the country, and the political temperature there never exactly cooled after 2020. Reopening this issue will almost certainly send partisan tensions soaring again. Democrats insist the election debate is settled history. Many Republicans argue that reviewing records and investigating concerns is exactly what responsible government should do.

Either way, the political class in Arizona is once again bracing for another round of arguments about an election that refuses to quietly fade into the past.
