As a potential strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) looms, Americans have been warned to stock up on essential items, including food and gas, to prepare for possible shortages. With 50,000 dockworkers threatening to walk off the job at major ports along the East and Gulf Coasts, the effects on the U.S. economy could be catastrophic.
The strike could cripple the supply chain, disrupting nearly half of all U.S. imports. Representative Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) issued a stark warning on social media, highlighting the nation’s precarious position. “America is now in a $36 billion food trade deficit for the first time in our history,” Greene wrote, urging Americans to prepare for a potential crisis that could stretch into the election, the holidays, and beyond.
The ILA, led by union president Harold Daggett, is demanding a $5 per hour wage increase per year over six years and other concessions. Daggett, known for his tough rhetoric, threatened to “cripple” the U.S. economy if demands aren’t met. The union rejected a counteroffer from port management, leaving negotiations deadlocked.
Economists are sounding the alarm, with many fearing that the strike will exacerbate inflation, disrupt supply chains, and further strain an economy some believe is already in recession. Truckers have voiced concerns, warning that the strike could compound existing logistical challenges in the transportation industry. “It’s the last thing we need right now,” said one trucker interviewed by CNBC, adding that the economic fallout could be devastating.
Adding fuel to the fire, the ILA endorsed Kamala Harris for president, raising eyebrows over the union’s political motivations. Some have questioned whether political favoritism is at play, given the union’s potential role in stalling the economy at a critical time.
Daggett himself has come under scrutiny. As reported by The New York Post, the 78-year-old union boss has led a life of luxury, complete with a Bentley and a 76-foot yacht, despite positioning himself as a champion for the working class. Daggett has faced accusations of mob ties, with Elon Musk retweeting details of Daggett’s controversial past, including his acquittal on racketeering charges.

With the strike now underway and the potential for severe economic disruption, the Biden-Harris administration faces mounting pressure to step in. Yet, as of today, Joe Biden has not offered a concrete plan to address the crisis, leaving Americans wondering what’s next.
