Trump DOJ Creates ‘Second Amendment Office’ to Protect American Freedoms

The Department of Justice under President Trump just rolled out something that should have happened ages ago, a dedicated office inside the Civil Rights Division to handle Second Amendment issues. You know, that little part of the Constitution that specifically protects the right of law abiding Americans to keep and bear arms. For years it has been treated like the awkward relative at Thanksgiving, everyone knows it is part of the family, but certain people pretend not to hear it when it talks.

According to information obtained by Reuters, the new office will be called the Second Amendment Rights Section and is slated to open December 4. What makes this even better is that the DOJ didn’t need to run to Congress for permission. They just had to give Congress a heads up. The document sent over said the reorganization can be done using existing funds and personnel, and the Office of Management and Budget didn’t object. In other words, no bureaucratic circus, just a simple move to take the Constitution seriously.

Predictably, some on the left clutched their pearls at the idea. Stacey Young, a former Civil Rights Division attorney, told Reuters, “The Civil Rights Division’s new focus on the Second Amendment, which is far outside its longstanding mission, is moving us even further away from our nation’s commitment to protecting all Americans’ civil rights.” The emphasis in the report was theirs, but the point she was trying to make was familiar. For some reason, the right to defend yourself mysteriously never makes the cut when certain activists start listing civil rights.

Meanwhile, a lot of Americans who actually read the Constitution are cheering. The NRA is certainly on board, and it is not hard to understand why. For decades, the federal government has treated the Second Amendment like something to be tolerated rather than upheld. Instead of constantly inventing new restrictions, maybe Washington can finally spend some time protecting the rights of the people who follow the law.

This move would never happen under a Democrat administration. They keep insisting they love the Constitution lately, yet the Second Amendment always seems to disappear behind the curtain whenever they start talking about rights. It is refreshing to see a DOJ that recognizes all parts of the Bill of Rights instead of trimming out the ones that make activist groups uncomfortable.

It will be interesting to watch this new office take shape. The real question is which cases it will dig into first, because there is certainly no shortage of situations where Americans have been pushed around for simply exercising a constitutional right.
