Just when you think President Trump can’t surprise the political world any more, he throws another curveball. In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Canada to make it the 51st state of the United States. While political analysts and media elites dismissed it as just another “Trumpian joke,” it turns out Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau isn’t laughing.
In a leaked hot mic moment during a closed-door meeting with Canadian business and labor leaders, Trudeau was caught admitting that Trump’s annexation talk is “a real thing.” According to reports from CBC and the Toronto Star, Trudeau nervously suggested that Trump’s interest goes beyond just tariffs and trade disputes. “Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country, and it is a real thing,” Trudeau reportedly said before the audio cut off.
Yes, I can confirm that Trudeau said his assessment is that what Trump really wants is not action on fentanyl or immigration or even the trade deficit — what he really wants is to either dominate Canada or take it outright. Tariffs are a tactic towards that end. https://t.co/leWzxYrnd4

But why would Trump be serious about annexing Canada? Simple: resources, national security, and leverage. As Trudeau himself pointed out, the U.S. is very aware of Canada’s critical mineral reserves—from rare earth elements to vast lumber supplies—and Trump, always the dealmaker, knows that controlling these resources would be a game-changer for America’s economic dominance.
Trump’s boldness doesn’t stop there. On Truth Social, he didn’t mince words:
“We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country. Harsh but true!”
He then added, “Therefore, Canada should become our cherished 51st state. Much lower taxes, far better military protection for the people of Canada—AND NO TARIFFS!”
What’s even more remarkable is how fast Trudeau caved under Trump’s pressure. After Trump threatened 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, Trudeau folded in less than 48 hours. The agreement? Canada pledged to deploy thousands of military and border security forces to the U.S. border and allocated an additional $1.3 billion for border security. That’s not just diplomacy—that’s Trump’s art of the deal in action.
And let’s not forget Mexico. Within 12 hours of Canada’s submission, Mexico’s government followed suit, agreeing to similar measures.
Trump isn’t just reshaping America’s borders—he’s reshaping the global order. Whether Canada officially becomes the 51st state or not, it’s clear that the United States is in the driver’s seat once again, and President Trump is gripping the wheel with both hands.
