Yet another state has taken a step toward the unconstitutional. Liberal states continue to challenge Trump and his ability to be on the ballot. They too do not trust their own citizens to decide the fate of our nation. Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, has declared that former President Donald J. Trump is ineligible to appear on the state’s 2024 Republican primary ballot. The decision comes from challenges based on the Fourteenth and Twenty-Second Amendments. I mean, who needs democracy when you can just decide who gets to run for office, right?
Bellows stated, “Mr. Trump’s primary petition is invalid…he is not qualified to hold the office of the President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment.” Now, I don’t know about you, but this seems like an awfully big decision for one person to make. And it’s not like Trump hasn’t been President before. He’s got a track record. But hey, what do I know?
The ruling also touched on the Twenty-Second Amendment, which limits the number of terms a person can be elected as President. Apparently, Trump’s claims about the 2020 election don’t disqualify him under this amendment. So, you can say whatever you want, just as long as you don’t actually win, I guess?
“The events of January 6, 2021 were unprecedented and tragic,” Bellows continued. “They occurred at the behest of, and with the knowledge and support of, the outgoing President. The U.S. Constitution does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government.” Those are some strong words. But aren’t we forgetting something? Like due process, or presumption of innocence, maybe?
Unsurprisingly, this decision has sparked a heated debate among conservatives and Trump supporters. Many see this as an overreach of state authority and a direct attack on the democratic process. It’s almost like people believe they should have a say in who gets to run for office. Imagine that!
Maine now joins Colorado as the only two states to bar Trump from the 2024 Presidential ballot. This decision has left many Trump supporters feeling frustrated and disenfranchised. But don’t worry, it’s not like these people vote or anything.
It seems like democracy is taking a bit of a holiday in Maine and Colorado. But hey, who needs free elections when you can just decide who gets to run for office, right?
