Hold on to your hats, folks, because it seems that US Attorney General Merrick Garland has just made a stunning admission about Special Counsel Jack Smith’s cases against President Trump. It’s like watching a political soap opera, but with less hair pulling and more legal jargon. In an interview with CNN, Garland admitted that he agrees there should be a ‘speedy trial’ for the two trials set to begin on March 4 and May 24. Now, I don’t know about you, but that sure sounds like election interference to me. And guess what? Trump is seeking to delay these trials until after the 2024 presidential election.
Garland also defended his department against allegations of election interference, stating, “The cases were brought last year. The prosecutor has urged speedy trials, with which I agree. And it’s now in the hands of the judicial system, not in our hands.” Well, isn’t that convenient?
Let’s not forget that Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to jail Trump shortly after the former president announced his 2024 White House run in November 2022. Now, I’m no legal expert, but that sure seems like a strategic move to me.
Trump’s lawyers have argued that Trump is immune from federal prosecution for alleged ‘crimes’ committed while he served as US President. This immunity argument is currently pending a decision by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. Meanwhile, over in Florida, Judge Cannon also hinted that the classified documents trial date will be postponed if the January 6 case in DC is delayed. Now that’s what I call a legal rollercoaster.
So, there you have it, folks. A legal showdown between Trump and the Department of Justice, with a side of election interference allegations and a dash of immunity arguments. This political drama is far from over, so stay tuned for the next episode.
