Well, folks, it seems like the history erasers are at it again. This time, they’re setting their sights on a Confederate statue in Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC. And guess what? They aren’t wasting any time. According to a report, a crane has already been moved into the cemetery for the removal and destruction of this Civil War Reconciliation Memorial.
Now, before we go any further, let’s take a moment to appreciate the irony here. This statue was dedicated by none other than President Calvin Coolidge back in 1924. It was the work of Jewish artist Moses Ezekiel and was built as a memorial to reconciliation after the American Civil War. Yep, you heard that right: reconciliation, not division. But apparently, that doesn’t matter to the history-erasing brigade.
And when was this demolition scheduled for? No later than January 1, 2024. Talk about starting the New Year with a bang. Meanwhile, the opposition to the demolition was reportedly in church for Advent while the crew worked swiftly. Seems like a pretty sneaky move, don’t you think?
But here’s the kicker: Congress voted earlier this year to remove the statue, with 41 Republicans joining Democrats in favor of its destruction. Now, I’m no mathematician, but that sounds like a lot of people who should know better.

The statue, which features thirty-two full-sized bronze figures, wasn’t just some random piece of metal. It depicted the universal experience of families affected by war. But hey, who needs historical context and nuance when you can just tear things down, right?
And you know what? This is just the beginning. How long will it be before other historical figures like Washington and Jefferson are removed from society? At this rate, we might as well start taking bets.
The demolition of this Confederate statue is more than just an act of historical vandalism. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of erasing our past. Because those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. And that’s a future none of us want.
