In 2023, the state of California is becoming increasingly difficult for conservatives and progressives are showing their political muscle by passing five new “woke” laws. The first law, SB 107, makes California a “sanctuary state” for transgender kids. It offers “refuge” to trans minors and their families if they are being criminalized in their home states by providing protection for gender-affirming care such as surgery and drugs.
The second law, SB 1375, allows nurses to perform abortions without the help of a doctor with a medical license. This law was passed alongside a referendum that ensures the right to access contraception and abortion services. The third law is known as the Covid misinformation law which requires medical licensing boards in the state to take disciplinary action against any doctors who spread false information about COVID.
The fourth legislation signed by Governor Newsom was called the Freedom to Walk Act which decriminalizes jaywalking because it is unfairly enforced in “communities of color”. As well as this, it prevents law enforcement from stopping people who are crossing the street that aren’t at a crosswalk unless they are in visible danger.
The fifth bill signed into effect was one that gives the state control over fast-food restaurants with a ten-member politburo that can set wages and working conditions within the industry. A group of restaurants collected petition signatures against this law and filed a lawsuit causing it to be put on hold until further notice.
These five new laws are sure to draw controversy among Californians, with some seeing them as progressive steps forward while others view them as violations of personal freedom or even dangerous infringements upon private businesses. Whether or not these laws remain implemented remains unseen, however, what can be certain is that California will continue its trend towards more progressive policies which has been occurring since Newsom’s election in 2018.
