The smoke of controversy is thickening around Georgia’s voting machines. In a groundbreaking decision that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, District Court Judge Amy Totenberg has ruled that there is sufficient cause to believe that these electronic voting machines could have significant flaws.
In an era where election integrity is under the microscope, this ruling strikes a resounding blow to those who have dismissed concerns about Georgia’s voting system as nothing more than “conspiracy theories”. Totenberg’s decision reveals that some of the nation’s leading cybersecurity experts and computer scientists have lent their expertise to support the plaintiffs’ case.
The Court has highlighted several objections to the 2020 election. These include the absence of a paper voting trail on the DREs, outdated operating systems on several voting machines, and software so antiquated that its manufacturers no longer offer security patches or support. This revelation is akin to discovering that the vault in your bank is secured with a rusty padlock from the last century!
The Court also delved into newly available evidence concerning data breaches, mismanagement of data systems, and record destruction events. The findings revealed additional troubling details about the breach, adding fuel to the fire of discontent surrounding the state’s voter registration database.
The plaintiffs raised issues concerning the state’s ability to audit the functionality of the BMDs. They pointed out that most voters do not review each of their selections contained in the human-readable text, which would not allow the printouts to be properly audited against the QR data.
The Court has now scheduled a bench trial for January 9, 2024, to resolve these disputes. However, the Court has also acknowledged that the most effective remedies for election integrity may be political, not judicial. It recognized that it cannot order the Georgia legislature to pass legislation creating a paper ballot voting system or impose a statewide paper ballot system as injunctive relief in this case. This decision underscores the urgent need for election reform. It’s time to put faith back into our democratic process, ensuring every citizen’s vote is accurately counted. The integrity of our democracy hangs in the balance, and we must not let it waver.
