Elon Musk has a line he likes to repeat, the most ironic outcome is usually the most likely. New York City just delivered a textbook example.
Communist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, champion of progressive purity and champion of big government solutions to everything from rent to refrigerators, is now begging New Yorkers to sign up as “emergency snow shovelers.” The same city that can spend $127 billion on a budget somehow needs residents to grab a shovel and save the day when winter hits.

But here is where the irony meter explodes.
If you want to sign up to shovel snow through the city’s official program at nyc.gov/snow, you do not just raise your hand and get a shovel. No, you need paperwork. A lot of it.
Applicants are required to bring multiple forms of identification. Two forms of ID. Copies of those IDs. A Social Security card. And, in some cases, passport style photos. All to participate in a program that involves clearing snow off sidewalks.
Let that sink in.

To shovel snow in New York City, you need a stack of documents that would make the DMV blush. But if you suggest that showing identification to vote in a national election might be reasonable, suddenly you are accused of trying to dismantle democracy.
For years, progressives have argued that voter ID laws are discriminatory, burdensome, and unfair. The mere suggestion that someone prove who they are before casting a ballot has been described as oppressive. Yet here we are, in progressive paradise, where you need multiple forms of government issued identification to push slush off a curb.
It would be funny if it were not so revealing.
No one is arguing that the city should not verify who it is hiring or registering for emergency programs. Basic identification requirements are common sense. Governments need to know who they are dealing with. Fraud prevention matters. Accountability matters.
That logic, apparently, applies to snow removal but not to safeguarding elections.
Mayor Mamdani’s administration likely views the snow shoveler requirements as routine administrative procedure. But politically, the optics are brutal. The same political philosophy that claims ID is an insurmountable barrier to voting now demands a documentation packet for a seasonal labor program.
It is hard to script irony this cleanly.
Elon Musk might just shrug and say he told you so. When ideology collides with reality, reality usually wins. In this case, reality looks like a clipboard, three forms of ID, and a snow shovel.
