In a bold move that reaffirms America’s solidarity with its long-standing ally, Israel, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to censure Democrat Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for her support of genocide against the Jewish state. In a 234-188 vote, 22 Democrats broke ranks to join 212 Republicans in voting for the censure, while four Republicans voted against it.
Tlaib, well-known for her controversial stance on Israel, was taken to task for promoting false narratives surrounding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for advocating the destruction of the state of Israel. The resolution underscored Israel’s historical rights to its lands and the critical role played by the U.S. in restoring these lands to Israel post-Holocaust.
The resolution pulled no punches, accusing Tlaib of defending the horrific acts of violence perpetrated by Hamas, including rapes, murders, beheadings, and kidnappings, under the guise of ‘resistance’ to an ‘apartheid state.’ Furthermore, it slammed Tlaib for knowingly spreading the falsehood that Israel intentionally bombed the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital on October 17, despite evidence to the contrary from U.S. intelligence, Israeli intelligence, and President Biden.
In another damning indictment, Tlaib was called out for her social media post on November 3, 2023, featuring the phrase “from the river to the sea.” This slogan is widely recognized as a genocidal call for the annihilation of Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Tlaib’s defense of this phrase as an “aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence” was rejected, with the resolution stating that it clearly entailed Israel’s destruction and denial of its right to exist.
The resolution concluded by castigating Tlaib for her conduct, which it deemed entirely unbecoming of a Member of the House of Representatives. It accused her of calling for Israel’s destruction and dangerously promoting false narratives about a large-scale terrorist attack on civilian targets inside Israel’s territory.
This censure is a significant blow to Tlaib and a clear message that support for genocide against Israel will not be tolerated in the U.S. Congress. It also serves as a stark reminder of the deep divides within the Democratic party over its stance on Israel and Palestine.
